WaterScan Mobile App

WaterScan Mobile App

Who

Water Footprint Network is a non-profit foundation, whose mission is to use the water footprint concept to promote the transition toward sustainable, fair and efficient use of fresh water resources worldwide.

What

Water Scan is a mobile app that calculates the water footprint of each product that the user consumes. The objective of this application is to make people aware of the use of water and give alternatives on products that have less water footprint. Based on data available on Water Footprint Org.

Did you know

Earth's resources are limited, specially water. For every single product on the market, there are tons of water involved to produce it. In turn, this weights heavily on the planet resources, and in many cases users feel powerless into taking educated actions to be more sustainable.

Approach

To design the app, my colleague Paulina Hoyo and I went through many iterations, consulted research and data visualisation graphs at the Water Footprint Network, in order to reflect in the most visual and digestible way all that goes behind the making of every product. She took care of all the UX design, low and high-fidelity mockups and together we worked on the UI and data research. I worked on the concept for the app, logo, corporate identity/CI and the website to advertise the app.

Solution

Create an accessible mobile interface to support users in making data-based decisions when consuming goods, and empower them to take actions as consumers.

App feature

The app features an accessible main screen, where users can either log-in or register their data (not shared with third parties, unless they give their consent) and start the process of becoming better citizens.

The camera feature is based on the Google Lens and its lengthly database, plus the Water Footprint Network's database, which together work to detect a product through the camera and then showcase the amount of litters a product needs to be produced.

Later on, the user is able to read on more data behind the product scanned and receive an educational input. This function showcases alternatives and the option to check for alternatives.

Finally the user has its own personal profile with their own captures, saved alternatives, which in turn create a feed where the user can read more about topics she/he/it has chosen, related to its own activity.

The website

To launch the mobile application, I created this website in Webflow.
